New York, New York: When it opened in 1909, the two-deck, $31 million Manhattan suspension bridge, just north of the Brooklyn Bridge, carried four trolley tracks, four subway tracks, and a pedestrian walkway. Serious cracks caused by trains were found in the steel superstructure in 1978. Ongoing reconstruction has so far cost $646 million.
