Chana Warshauer-Baker I Looked Like a Kid from Far Away
I made this series of photographs and writings because I wanted to speak about the cycle of self-obsessed self-destruction that had become my life. The act of photographing myself was a way to become removed or detached long enough to give myself the illusion of control and objectivity, or at least that I was making something. My photographs and writings were an attempt to make sense of what was going on. Maybe I wanted to aestheticize a very ugly experience that appears to be about beauty, but in truth, I believe, is more about a struggle for control and a fear of growing up. (I put everything in a box to somehow contain it.) "I Looked Like a Kid from Far Away" is dedicated to my family and friends who helped me get through this hard time in my life. |
