One hundred years after a tormented Dutch painter in Provence ignored Impressionism -- slashing firestorms of tube-pure colors across his canvases, creating bouquets of sunflowers as never had been seen before -- I dedicated a blast-furnace summer and all of my curiosity to his radiant subjects.
